The FIDO Alliance is an open industry association launched in February 2013 whose mission is to develop and promote authentication standards that help reduce the world’s over-reliance on passwords. Yubico has pioneered the development of authentication standards that the FIDO Alliance has adopted.

Who is part of the FIDO alliance?
The FIDO alliance has more than 250 members all from different areas of the computing ecosystem. Along with board members there are quite a few companies that make up the whole of the alliance. To see a whole list, please view the website.
What has the FIDO alliance done so far?

In 2014, FIDO U2F was released as the first passwordless protocol. Various updates have since been made.

In 2016, the W3C launched a new standard based on FIDO2 to standardize strong authentication

In 2019, Webauthnbecame a web standard. Webauthn is a core component of the FIDO alliance’s set of FIDO2 set of specifications.
