Yubico Releases YubiKey NEO, NEO-N with Support for FIDO Alliance’s Universal Second Factor Protocol

PALO ALTO, CA, OCT. 13, 2014 – Yubico, the leading provider of simple, open online identity protection, today released the next version of its YubiKey® NEO and NEO-n that includes support for the Universal Second Factor (U2F) protocol, an emerging standard being developed by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance.

* Note – as of May 21, 2015, Yubico FIDO Ready™ products became official FIDO Certified™ products.  Read more here.

Being U2F FIDO Ready™, one single YubiKey NEO or NEO-n security key can be used with any number of online services, with no user information or encryption keys shared between service providers. FIDO U2F enables users to own and control their online identity. The U2F protocol breaks the mold for high-security, public key hardware devices, removing the complexity of drivers, clients software and the traditional costly certificate authority model.

In addition to U2F support, the YubiKey NEO supports both contact (USB) and contactless (NFC, MIFARE) communications. It uniquely supports One-Time Passcodes, and smart card functionality, including OpenPGP and PIV. The NEO-n provides the same support as the NEO with the exception of NFC.

“This key holds the promise of a significantly more secure online consumer experience, and a dramatic increase in enterprise security and ease-of-use,” said John Haggard, Chief Business Officer at Yubico, Inc., which is also a board member at the FIDO Alliance. “The FIDO Alliance’s U2F protocol adds the missing element, a standards-layer to enable one key to authenticate to all applications in our ecosystems while maintaining trust and end-user privacy.”

The YubiKey NEO and NEO-n security keys work across Windows, Mac, Linux, major browsers and mobile platforms supporting NFC (NDEF type 4). The NEO and NEO-n are compatible with any USB port.

The NEO and NEO-n are available now directly from Yubico or at Amazon.com.
