Transcending passwordless authentication with HYPR and Yubico

In today’s ever-evolving cyberthreat landscape, organizations face increasing challenges in securing their sensitive data and systems from sophisticated attacks like AI-strengthened phishing campaigns or impersonation attacks backed by spates of leaked PII . Even in today’s environments where new, ever larger, breaches make news every week, we’re continuing to see enterprises and employees across the globe rely on legacy authentication methods and even traditional usernames and passwords. In fact, a new Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) study, jointly commissioned by HYPR and Yubico, found that a surprising 91% of business’ workers continue to rely on passwords as a primary form of authentication.

The challenge – and opportunity – faced by businesses comes with balancing security and user experience. A good user experience with authentication is a critical factor for employees – so much so that 65% of respondents in the survey indicated they would be motivated to change employers if presented with high-friction authentication processes. Additionally, 78% indicated they would be attracted to leave their current job for a new employer that offers easy-to-use authentication processes.

The results of the survey present a clear snapshot of what the biggest challenges are within authentication today, and what the impact of continued reliance on unsecure forms of authentication has. The survey also found that 82% of businesses reported IT security breaches occurred in their organizations in the last year, including compromised credentials, and successful phishing attacks. Businesses know it’s critical to change and move toward modern security and authentication tools, but often don’t know where to start.

To address these concerns, HYPR and Yubico have partnered to offer a comprehensive solution that empowers organizations with flexible and choice-driven passwordless phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA). By combining physical and virtual tokens, our joint solution ensures secure and consistent user experiences, enabling organizations to meet compliance requirements, reduce risks, improve operational efficiency and provide low friction authentication that delights instead of driving off end users.

Together, HYPR and Yubico provide a seamless passwordless authentication experience that meets security needs of organizations while increasing employee satisfaction by supporting FIDO certified software and/or hardware-bound passkeys. This approach caters to different use cases and user preferences, ensuring a seamless and secure login and SSO experience across diverse environments and devices including Windows, MacOS, Linux, and VDI workstations.

The joint solution works with all major identity technologies, including Identity Providers (IdPs), Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems and Single Sign-On (SSO) services, providing complete coverage without restricting you to a specific product suite or platform.

“Our partnership with Yubico provides a seamless passwordless authentication experience that provides flexibility to use both software or hardware, accelerating user adoption,” said Bojan Simic, CEO, HYPR. “This new data highlights that there is broad consensus that passwordless authentication, specifically FIDO-based technologies, are the way forward. Our joint solution can stop account takeovers and simplify user and admin experiences.”

With users working across desktop, mobile, and shared workstations on varying devices, businesses need maximum flexibility when selecting modern phishing-resistant MFA and choosing the YubiKey form factors users need based on the devices they love. Combining the YubiKey with your HYPR deployment eliminates credential reuse, stops phishing attacks and mitigates account takeovers while improving user experience and accelerating employee productivity.

“Our independent and objective research findings confirm that we have reached an inflection point in authentication solutions driven by broad recognition that reliance on traditional passwords is no longer sustainable,” noted Chris Steffen, vice president of research, EMA. “It is an honor to have our comprehensive evaluation sponsored by two of the leading voices responsible for redefining how we think of and define identity security.”
