Yubico and Digidentity provide FIDO U2F authentication to the UK

GOV.UK Verify is a new simple way for UK citizens to access an increasing range of UK government services online. This is the first government service in the world to make support for the new open authentication standard FIDO U2F.

UK citizens can easily purchase a FIDO U2F authenticator online and register it with Digidentity, one of the UK government’s certified identity service providers. Yubico’s durable FIDO U2F-certified YubiKeys work with a single touch, and need no drivers or client software. YubiKeys are used by millions of people in over 150 countries.

GOV.UK Verify, Yubico, and Digidentity won “Best Innovation in eGovernment/eCitizen” at the European Identity & Cloud Conference 2016 Awards Ceremony, in May 2016, for the GOV.UK Verify project. Read more

Background on Universal Second Factor (U2F)

FIDO U2F is an emerging open authentication standards initiative with strong support from more than 180 end-user and vendor companies in the FIDO Alliance, a consortium working to bring strong authentication to the masses.

U2F breaks the mold for high-security, public-key hardware devices by removing the complexity of drivers, client software and the traditional costly certificate authority (CA) model.

With FIDO U2F, one single device can be used with any number of online services with no user information or encryption keys shared between the service providers.

To see where else you can use your U2F-certified YubiKey, see our FIDO U2F page. For additional FAQs, see our Support FAQs.

For more information about FIDO U2F, see the full U2F Specifications on the FIDO Alliance website.
