Introducing the expanded YubiKey Bio Series: YubiKey Bio Multi-protocol Edition (Early Access)

As the threat of sophisticated attacks like phishing continue to rise, enterprise users and cybersecurity teams are seeking a solution that offers robust security and user-friendly functionality. With the increasing adoption of biometric logins, enterprises aim to marry strong security with user convenience to boost productivity and job satisfaction. Hardware security keys that leverage biometrics, like the YubiKey Bio Series, provide portable, seamless functionality – all while facilitating passwordless login through biometrics.

This is why we’re excited to announce the YubiKey Bio Series is now expanding to add two new multi-protocol keys that support biometric authentication with support for FIDO and Smart Card/PIV protocols: YubiKey C Bio – Multi-protocol Edition (USB-C) and YubiKey Bio – Multi-protocol Edition (USB-A).

The YubiKey Bio Series – Multi-protocol edition is currently available through an Early Access program with our featured partner, HYPR and will be available exclusively via YubiEnterprise Subscription – included with the Compliance tier or as an add-on in the Advanced tier (not available in the Base tier).

Like the existing YubiKey Bio Series – FIDO Edition, the new YubiKey Bio Series – Multi-protocol Edition keys enable secure fingerprint biometric and PIN-based passwordless login, create a frictionless experience across devices and platforms, and helps reduce IT helpdesk costs. Users can expect increased speed, with less reliance on PINs using an intuitive biometric authentication flow. YubiKey Bio Series – Multi-protocol Edition, currently in Early Access, offers multiple benefits and support to the following areas for businesses:

  • Continued industry-leading innovation
    • Phishing-resistant FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F and Smart Card/PIV protocol
    • Stored and matched fingerprint templates on a separate secure element
  • Ease of use
    • Strong, passwordless Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) and Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
    • Biometric and PIN-based authentication enables frictionless secure login
  • High ROI with reduced IT helpdesk costs
  • Enrollment to workstations using HYPR applications to centrally manage credentials
  • Support for desktop login and web authentication
    • Desktop logins on Microsoft Windows using Smart Card/PIV with a fingerprint
    • Web authentications with FIDO using the same biometrics as desktop login

“The YubiKey Bio Series – Multi-protocol Edition is another step towards fully phishing-resistant, passwordless adoption in the enterprise and HYPR is thrilled to be the initial launch partner with Yubico,” said Sean Dyon, vice president of strategic alliances at HYPR. “Our ongoing collaboration with Yubico helps organizations accelerate their passwordless journey. This new solution weaves the very best components of our joint technologies, and we cannot be more excited to share new functionalities, added flexibility and the highest level of authentication security, for our joint customers.”

With added support for Smart Card/PIV protocol, the new Multi-protocol Edition keys provide versatility across a wide range of devices, operating systems, and applications, and can address both legacy on-premises and modern cloud environments. This enterprise-grade offering empowers users with passwordless, phishing-resistant MFA enhanced by biometric authentication. The YubiKey Bio Series continues to meet Yubico’s rigorous security standards, building on its industry-leading legacy.
