Digital security’s unique role in protecting our environment

As sustainability expands to include social, economic, and technological challenges, cybersecurity has emerged as a top global threat – with cybercrime projected to cost $12 trillion this year. Stolen credentials and phishing account for 80% of breaches.

At Yubico, making the world more secure is just part of how we care for the world around us. From reducing our environmental impact to supporting at-risk communities online, we’re committed to doing our part.

Partnering with Solvatten for clean water

While many Yubico employees enjoy the benefit of working from home, from time to time, some may be required to travel for their role. To offset the environmental impact that can come along with travel, since 2022 we’ve partnered with Solvatten – a social enterprise committed to providing people living in developing countries with safe and hot water in a portable, environmentally-friendly way. In 2024, Yubico’s donations funded 86 solar water-cleaning units, which provided 3.6 million liters of clean, warm and sustainable water to 430 individuals.

“Stop global boiling: Over two billion people still rely on wood or coal to treat and heat their water, placing a heavy burden on women and girls,” said Oliwer Wadström, CEO at Solvatten. “Since 2022, Solvatten and Yubico have joined forces to address this unsustainable practice; thanks to companies and organizations like Yubico, more than 800,000 people are now benefiting from Solvatten globally.”

Secure It Forward: Digital security for vulnerable populations

Our commitment to sustainability extends into digital security, which is why we created Secure It Forward – a program that provides YubiKeys free of charge to individuals and non-profit organizations who are often under-resourced and at risk of having their digital security compromised.

Since launching in 2021, we’ve donated more than 65,000 keys to nonprofits and advocacy groups in over 20 countries – including The Anti-Defamation League, Freedom of the Press, The Legal Aid Society, and Civil Rights Defenders.

As part of the Secure It Forward program, we’re also honored to collaborate with Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare. Together, we offer a holistic approach to cybersecurity – combining our tools with email protection from Google and Microsoft, and DDoS mitigation from Cloudflare. This kind of teamwork ensures that even the most vulnerable communities have the digital defenses they need.

As we look to the future, Yubico remains committed to driving positive change by advancing both environmental sustainability and digital security – because a safer, more resilient world starts with protecting what matters most.
