Leading Open Source Password Manager Password Safe Implements YubiKey Support

PALO ALTO, Calif. and STOCKHOLM, Feb. 14, 2012 – Yubico, the leading provider of simple, open online identity protection, today announced a successful implementation of YubiKey two-factor authentication with the free, open source password manager software Password Safe. The joint solution offers Windows users an easy and affordable way to manage and secure their Internet passwords from their own computer.

Password Safe is the leading open source consumer password manager software, assisting more than one million users with a free, easy and secure way to manage passwords. To ensure that unauthorized users do not get access to the passwords stored in the software stored on the computer, Password Safe has now integrated support for YubiKey two-factor authentication, including the high security challenge-response functionality.

“The combination of Password Safe’s proven Open Source approach to secure password management with Yubico’s secure and elegant hardware authentication token provides users with the best of both worlds: independently verifiable two-factor security and ease-of use,” said Rony Shapiro, project manager for Password Safe.

The YubiKey is a small, practically indestructible USB-token that simplifies the process of logging in with a secure One-Time Password (OTP).

“As online identity theft rapidly increases, Yubico is pleased to see a growing number of password managers and open source projects adding support for YubiKey two-factor authentication,” said Stina Ehrensvärd, CEO and founder, Yubico. “Password Safe offers a well implemented software enabling YubiKey users to easily manage and control their passwords from their own computers.”

The Password Safe software is available for free download at pwsafe.org. It takes only a few minutes to install it on a Windows computer, and any YubiKey can be programmed by the user to the YubiKey challenge-response mode to be used with Password Safe. To further simplify for Password Safe users, Yubico offers a pre-configured set of two YubiKeys at a one time cost of US $45.
