Ditching passwords for good: Celebrating the inaugural World Passkey Day

Have you ever been stuck in a relationship with someone who constantly lets you down, exposes your secrets, and leaves you vulnerable? Odds are you cut your losses, packed up your things and moved on. Today is the day to do the same with your passwords: say goodbye forever! The reality is a majority of people haven’t kicked their relationship with passwords to the curb, despite being the least secure form of authentication.

At the root of all phishing attacks are passwords, as they are the frontline for malicious actors to breach an account. The internet was not built with security in mind, and passwords have been a decades-long bandaid to a problem that continues increasing as bad actors become more sophisticated. That’s why Yubico is taking the Passkey Pledge with the FIDO Alliance in recognition of World Passkey Day, formerly known as World Password Day, to put a spotlight on passkey-based authentication like security keys to make the internet safer and more accessible globally.

A look at the passkey future with YubiKeys

Passkeys are quickly becoming the new standard for logging in to apps and websites. Instead of using passwords, passkeys use secure cryptographic “keys” stored on your device or computer – allowing you to easily sign in with a fingerprint, face scan, pin or pattern with no passwords to manage or remember. Since 2018, passkeys have been supported on YubiKeys – making them an easy and highly secure way to log in without passwords.

Passkeys have revolutionized authentication by eliminating passwords, and device-bound passkey options like the YubiKey ensure that passkeys remain in the hands of their rightful owners – resistant to phishing, malware and unauthorized access. As a physical security key, YubiKeys protect against phishing attacks and other forms of cyber threats. It also makes remote working safer by helping you securely access hundreds of the apps, services, and devices you use every day.

While passkeys are paving the way to a passwordless future, not all passkeys offer the same level of security – including security tradeoffs of synced passkeys. Synced passkeys live in the cloud and can be shared across devices, making them convenient but not suitable for high-security needs. Device-bound passkeys, like security keys, stay locked to one device – delivering stronger, enterprise-grade security and management capabilities for organizations of all sizes.

This World Passkey Day, Yubico is empowering individuals and businesses to embrace passkeys with confidence – offering a secure, simple, and scalable solution for modern authentication. To further support a passwordless future, the Works with YubiKey catalog continues to grow, featuring new and popular integrations that bring passkey authentication to more services and platforms.
