FIDO Alliance Publishes Final FIDO 1.0 Specifications, First Industry Standards for Universal Strong Authentication

PALO ALTO, CA, DEC. 9, 2014 – Yubico, the leading provider of simple, open online identity protection, today announced that the FIDO Alliance has published final FIDO 1.0 Specifications for universal strong authentication. This final version of the specifications enable all FIDO Alliance members to broadly commercialize FIDO authentication, and non-members to adopt FIDO compliant implementations developed by a FIDO Alliance member.

Yubico serves as a board member and is co-author and key driver of the FIDO U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) protocol.  Earlier this quarter, Yubico introduced the FIDO U2F Security Key, a new and easy to use two-factor authentication device, which supports FIDO U2F functionality added to Google Accounts and the Chrome browser.  This was the first public and highly successful deployment of FIDO U2F, preparing the market for broad adoption of strong two-factor authentication in the coming year

With today’s launch of the final FIDO 1.0 Specifications, online service providers, enterprises and consumers can all experience the high security, broad industry support, and ease of use from these new open standards.  The YubiKey NEO, NEO-n and FIDO U2F Security Key all support FIDO U2F 1.0 Specifications.

“Yubico was built with the vision of making strong authentication easy and affordable for everyone,” said Stina Ehrensvard, CEO and Founder, Yubico, Inc. “With FIDO Universal 2nd Factor, users can now use a single Security Key to login to Gmail and any number of service providers supporting the emerging standard. The login process is instant, and online services can easily implement the technology with free and open source software.”

Each FIDO U2F key relies on high-security, public-key cryptography. To authenticate, all it takes is a simple touch the button on the key after it has been inserted into a USB port. With all Yubico FIDO U2F products, there are no drivers, no client software, no middleware, and no traditional and costly certificate authority (CA) model.

YubiKey NEO, NEO-n and FIDO U2F Security Key work across Windows, Mac, Linux and are available immediately. For online service providers, free and open source reference servers are available for easy integration. For more information please visit www.yubico.com.
