miiCard Boosts Security with YubiKey Authentication

PALO ALTO, Calif. – April 16, 2013 – Online identity proofing service miiCard announced its support for the YubiKey hard token authentication device to further strengthen its Level of Assurance 3 Plus (LoA3+) identity verification solution. Support for YubiKey authentication expands the options for asserting or accepting a verified identity through miiCard’s Bring Your Own Identity (BYOID) service for consumers and Identity as a Service (IDaaS) platform for businesses.

miiCard can prove an individual’s identity to the level of an offline photo ID check in minutes and purely online. miiCard uses multi-factor authentication tools to prove the connection between a user and this verified identity. With YubiKey, miiCard can authenticate users through a unique physical token that only an authorized user possesses and that cannot be duplicated. This combination of miiCard’s bank level ID verification service and YubiKey’s hard token security device enables the most secure and highest value transactions online.

“miiCard support for YubiKey authentication enables a higher threshold of security and a greater degree of control over online identity for consumers and businesses,” said miiCard CEO James Varga. “Ultimately, more authentication choices makes miiCard a more flexible solution that can fit a range of online identity verification needs from social networking all the way to complex financial transactions.”

miiCard BYOID members can now use YubiKey to secure their accounts and access one-time passcodes. Similarly, businesses using miiCard’s IDaaS platform can require visitors to use YubiKey as an additional authentication threshold.

“The combination of YubiKey and miiCard balances usability and flexibility for online identity proofing,” said Stina Ehrensvärd, CEO and Founder of Yubico, the maker of YubiKey. “By using YubiKey, miiCard provides a more secure authentication method but retains the ease and flexibility demanded by consumers and businesses.”

The miiCard policy engine allows for a wide range of multi-factor authentication tools to protect miiCard accounts and ensure true assertion of identity, including hard and soft tokens, biometrics, geolocation, and SMS through handheld devices. These multiple authentication options enable a more flexible identity verification solution with different levels of assurance for different security scenarios.

miiCard’s LoA3+ service is currently able to verify over 350 million individuals across ten countries and five continents. miiCard BYOID members can add their own YubiKey, purchase one through miiCard, or new users can add it to their miiCard subscription at sign up.  For more information, please visit www.miicard.com/business/multi-factor-authentication.
