Swedish municipality uses secure and cost efficient access solutions from MobilityGuard and Yubico

April 2010

To enable secure and cost efficient access to IT-systems and buildings, Vellinge Municipality in Sweden, has chosen RFID YubiKey, the innovative authentication key from Yubico. As authentication software, the municipally has already installed solutions from MobilityGuard, a leading provider of identity management solutions, used by more than 80 Swedish local e-governments.

Online identity theft is the fastest growing crime. Leading security experts agree that security solutions based on software only, such as username/-passwords or soft certificates are no longer sufficient protection. The hardware security solutions providing a higher level of protection, such as bank authentication tokens and smart cards, are in general expensive and complex for IT-departments and users.

To increase security to both IT-systems and buildings, at less complexity and cost, Vellinge Municipality is deploying RFID YubiKeys for all their employees. The product, which looks like a flat USB-memory, is developed by the Swedish innovation company Yubico. As a unique feature, the YubiKey generates encrypted pass codes in a simple touch of a button and works on all platforms and browsers without the need for client software. By integrating an RFID chip in the YubiKey, the same device can be used for access control for buildings, printers, photocopiers, etc.

”MobilityGuard and RFID YubiKey meets our requirements for easy, secure and robust access solutions” says Gert Åberg, IT Manager for Vellinge Municipality.
